Dusty Rain

Dusty Rain

The spots on my glasses shown here are almost entirely from riding home in a light rain for about five minutes. (The very tiniest specks aren't, but the rest are.) It had just started raining, and apparently there was still a lot of dust in the air...

  1. I love this picture! It is beautifully composed and the lighting is great. The black background and subtle reflection are quite nice. You have a nice lens that allows for good close-up photography.

  2. Thanks! I was just playing around with a way to show how incredibly dirty my glasses got from that brief ride, and this is what came out of it. I knew I wanted the background dark and the light on the glasses coming from the side, to make the dust stand out.

The glass was improvisation, though. Initially I just had the glasses sitting on top of a black T-shirt, but with the light skimming across at a very oblique angle, it hardly looked black at all! (Lots of little fibers and such really stood out.) So I just set a piece of glass across the shirt and was surprised at how effective it was at preventing that. First time I've shot on glass... You probably already noticed this, but you can see the double reflection, too.

Side note: focusing gets a bit harder when I'm not actually wearing my glasses. Also, I do like this lens quite a bit, but a real macro is on my wish list! This is as close as this one gets.
